RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA — A wildfire named the NICHOLS FIRE ignited today and is now 50 acres and has a 35% containment status. The forward progression has been stopped
It started around 1244 hours PT on Monday, July 7th, and is burning on I-5, north of Nichols Road in unincorporated Lake Elsinore, California.
Earlier reports indicate firefighters quickly responded and were on the scene, reporting a 30-acre fire was burning and had a moderate rate of spread, was wind-driven, and was located on the east side of the freeway. One lane on the freeway was closed by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The cause is unknown and under investigation.
The Lead Fire Agency is CAL FIRE – Riverside Unit (CAL FIRE RU)
There are about 110 total personnel with two (2) helicopters, 15 engines, two (2) dozers, two (2) water tenders, three (3), and five (5) other types of resources assigned.
One firefighter was injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. The individual’s condition is currently unknown.
ANOTHER wildfire broke out in the Riverside County area, which broke out on Bluff Street and Mias Canyon Road, north of Banning. That fire was said to be about two acres in size and burning in the canyon with a moderate rate of spread around 1242 hours PT. At 1445, the fire had burned about 13 acres, and firefighters were busy building containment lines. Shortly, one hour later, the fire’s forward progression had been stopped, and resources were committed to remain on the scene for another two (2) hours. This was the BLUFF FIRE.
