Update 12: May 20, 2026, @ 2130 hours PDT

The SANTA ROSA ISLAND FIRE continues to burn on the Island, located on the south side of Santa Rosa Island, between Ford and South Points, which ignited on May 15, 2026, at 1619 hours PDT. This is located in the Channel Islands (on National Park lands).

A boater had partially capsized on the shore of the island and was able to make it fully onto land, and was requesting help via an SOS by using flares. Unfortunately, his plea for help started a wildfire which has been moving quickly over land, threatening structures and natural habitats.

As of today, the fire has burned about 17,554 acres, but has a 44% containment status. Fire behavior remains active with running, crowning and torching.

About 135 total firefighters remain assigned to this incident, along with three (3) crews.

Three (3) structures have been lost, and causing a total of 1.7 million dollars in expenses to date for fire suppression and containment efforts.
