UPDATE 1 – APRIL 14, 2017 – 1800 PDT

Fire Incident

The Dobson Knob wildfire is located at the north Cove Community of McDowell County, west of Dobson Knob and 2 miles South of North Cove, North Carolina. Between FS Road 106 and US 221. It was reported on April 9, at 1815 Hours.

Acreage

There has been 1,507 acres of hardwood litter scorched.

Resources

Fire crews have reached a 58% containment status.  There are 214 personnel assigned to this incident.

Resources include a N.C. Forest Service Type 2 IMT continues to manage the fire in cooperation with the USFS, McDowell Co. Emergency Management, and Fire Departments representing Woodlawn, Marion, North Cove, Pleasant Gardens, Old Fort, Hankins, and Dysartsville.

12 crews. 8 engines. 3 Helicopters.

Damage Assessment

Fire behavior is active with backing and creeping.

$174,000 cost-to-date for fire suppression efforts.

Current Conditions

Structures threatened. Area and trail closures in effect.

Fire Tactics

Today’s operations include patrolling and extinguishing remaining hotspots near established containment lines on the western, northern and eastern sides of the fire. Burnout operations are planned to the south and will result in more visible smoke.

BREAKING | 2 Alarm Fire in Winston-Salem NC

Updated 2005 PST

Winston-Salem, NC – A fire broke out at the former site of Brown Elementary on the corner of 12th and Highland around 8:26 PM EST.

The fire was quickly elevated to a 2nd alarm building fire prompting Engines 4, 1, 3, 9, 8, 17 and 6; Trucks 1, 5 and 14. Rescue 1. Battalions 2 and 3. Safety 8. Chief 7. Air 1. 101 and 100. EMS 23 and Bus 1 to respond in force.

Heavy fire was seen from the rooftop and reports of the 2nd floor collapsing.

The Thomas Water Plant provided an additional pump to assist crews with water supply.  At one time there were four elevated streams and five hydrants in operation.

A primary and secondary search were conducted in the fire building and to the Bravo and Delta exposure sides.  Nothing was found.

No injuries were reported.

At the same time, additional fire resources were being dispatched to another location for a possible unknown type of fire at 38 Elm Street but turned out to be just alarms sounding.

Fire Investigators were dispatched to the scene.

After fire crews arrived on-scene they reported nothing seen or found.  Units 2X, 4X, 7X, L1X, L2, E2, E5 and B3 were slowly being put back in service.

Cause is unknown at this time.

Wildfires Starting to Dwindle Down | North Carolina | Update 10

Camp Branch Fire – 7 miles W of Franklin

The Camp Branch Fire started on November 23rd, East of Wayah Bald from an unknown cause that is under investigation.

Currently, 1,483 acres of hardwood timber and grass litter have been consumed.  Two (2) structures have been lost.

There are 51 personnel along with 3 crews and 6 engines assigned to this incident.

Cost-to-date:  $100,000

Fire Managers reported one new brush fire which started on private property in the Hickory Knoll community but it was quickly contained by crews.  They would like to remind all residents that outdoor burning is banned until further notice.

The Camp Branch wildfire behavior is active, flanking and backing.  Residents may see smoke from the Rock Mountain Fire in Southern Maco County and Camp Branch Fire on Saturday and Sunday.  Some may even see flames in various areas.  The fire is being monitored.

Boteler Fire – 6 mles E of Hayesville, S of Boteler Peak ( Clay County )

The Boteler Fire started on October 25th in the Shooting Creek community ( Clay County ).

Currently, 9,043 acres have been scorched but crews have reached a  77% containment status.  0 structures have been lost.

Fire behavior has changed from moderate, creeping and smoldering to minimal.

Personnel also has dropped from 334 personnel being assigned to 186 with 4 crews, 19 engines and 2 helicopters.

The cost-to-date has been increased from $8.64 to $10.5 Million.

Cathey Gap Fire – 3 mi NE of Wolf Creek Lane

The Cathey Gap Fire started on November 17th from an unknown cause that is being investigated.

The Fire has destroyed 123 acres of forest lands and has not increased.  Crews have successfully reached a containment of 99% from yesterday’s 90% status.

From having a staff of 13, personnel has been reduced to 1 person with no additional resources on-scene.

The fire’s cost-to-date has increased from $216,000 up to $342,000.

Maple Springs Fire – 8 mi SW of Franklin

The Maple Springs Fire currently has a fire behavior of minimum but has consumed 7,788 acres of hardwood litter and timber.

At this time, there are 100 personnel with 2 crews, 6 engines and 5 helicopters that have reached a containment status of 78%.

Cost-to-date is $6.3 Million.

Telico Fire – 3 mi S of Almond

The Telico Fire is currently has a minimum fire behavior but has destroyed a path of burned 13,874 acres of hardwood litter, timber and short grass.

At this time, there are only 67 personnel assisting with this wildfire along with 4 engines.

The fire cost-to-date is $5.2 Million.

Clear Creek Fire – 5 mi W of Marion

The Clear Creek Fire has a moderate fire behavior that is currently backing and flanking, as well as 2,423 acres of hardwood litter with a 30% containment status.

There are 457 personnel along with 13 crews, 25 engines and 2 helicopters.

Cost-to-date is $1.6 Million.

Party Rock Fire – 1 mi N of Lake Lure

This Lake Lure fire called the Party Rock Fire, has a fire behavior that is minimal but has consumed 7,171 acres of hardwood litter and timber.  An 80% containment status has been reached.

There are 290 personnel assigned along with 6 crews, 23 engines and 1 helicopter.

3 structures have been lost.

Cost-to-date is $6.9 Million.

Highway 151 Fire – 30 mi SE of Ashville

This Fire is in the National Forests in North Carolina and is reported having a minimal fire behavior that has eaten through 245 acres of hardwood litter.  It currently has a 30% containment status.

There are 51 personnel assigned along with 1 crew, 7 engines and 1 helicopter.

Cost-to-date is $100,000.

Clear Creek Fire:  NEW! Start 11/20/2016.  5 miles NW of Marion (McDowell County). 1,187 acres. 0% contained. 150 personnel. Command is under the Eastern Montana Type II Incident Management Team. IMT working with the US Forest Service, NC Forest Service, and McDowell County partners. Cause unknown & under investigation. Nebo Crossing Church for residents affected by the smoke from the Clear Creek Fire. Transportation is available by calling 652-3241 or 652-3982.

Dicks Creek Fire:  Start 10/23/2016. Dicks Creek Drainage, 2 miles NW of Sylva.

With hundreds of men and women in the camp, aliments can spread through the population like wildfire (pun intended). Macon County gives Firefighters an opportunity to see a doctor on site, without an appointment.

Tellico Fire:  Start 11/3/2016. 3 miles south of Almond (Swain County)   Human caused.

U.S. Forest Service blasting team will remove hazardous hemlocks on the northern edge of the Boteler Fire in the area of Chunky Girl Trail, Bruce Ridge, and Nelson Ridge Road. No blasting will occur near homes.

No one knows this area better than the folks who live here. When there are no signs and roads aren’t on the map, local knowledge helps firefighters get where they need to be.

Party Rock Fire:  The fire has crossed over containment lines.  800 acres. 15% containment status.  Chimney Rock and Lake Lure communities are being evacuated.  Shelters for residents are:  Bat Cave Baptist Church on Chimney Rock Rd in Henderson;   Bills Creek Baptist Church in Lake Lure;  Greenhill Baptist Church in Rutherfordton, NC.

Fires are breaking out all over North Carolina from human caused to unknown causes which are being fiercely investigated by Law Enforcement agencies.

Evacuations are in effect for Swain County.  Shelter is available if residents need it by contacting the Swain County Sheriff Office Dispatch at 828-488-2196.  The Shelter is located at the Swain County Senior Center.

Unknown cause. 6,065 acres. 10% containment status.  300 personnel assigned.  Behavior is active, uphill runs and short-range spotting.  Crews to continue constructing containment lines, firing, and holding critical line segments in the evening.   Fire managed by Rocky Mountain Blue Management Team.

Muskrat Valley Fire (NEW):  Start 11/11/2016.  Near Hwy 64 and SW of Franklin, NC.  Unknown cause. One 20-person crew and 2 engines. 90 acres. 50% contained.

Party Rock Fire:  The fire has crossed over containment lines.  800 acres. 15% containment status.  Chimney Rock and Lake Lure communities are being evacuated.  Shelters for residents are:  Bat Cave Baptist Church on Chimney Rock Rd in Henderson;   Bills Creek Baptist Church in Lake Lure;  Greenhill Baptist Church in Rutherfordton, NC.

Ridge Gap Fire (NEW):  Unknown start date or location.  2 acres. Unknown containment status.

Tellico Fire: Started 10/23/2016. 3 miles south of Almond, NC,  Human caused. 9,982 acres. 23% containment status.  Fire burned over Paint Mountain. Naturally wants to merge with Ferebee Fire in Swain and Macon Counties.  7 crews, 46 engines, 9 dozers, 3 water tenders.  NW Winds 7-15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph expected. RH down to 25%.

NEW Fire: Party Rock | NC | Update 1

The Party Rock Fire is located at Chimney Rock State Park and 1 mile North of Lake Lure in North Carolina. The fire started on November 5th at 1:00 PM from an unknown cause.

The fire has consumed 977 acres of hardwood litter.

Fire crews have successfully reached a 15% containment status but still are providing structure protection, burnout operations and contingent planning.

There are 142 personnel assigned to this incident.

No injuries have been reported.
