USS Bonhomme Richard Ship Settles for Long Haul | 5

UPDATE 5 – 7/15/2020 2345 PT

INCIDENT SUMMARY

Reports of an explosion occurred on July 12th and still continue to burn on Day 3 on the USS Bohomme Richard (LHD-6), a 40,000 ton Wasp class U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship.

Scheduled  routine maintenance in between deployments has brought the large ship to port and remains while Navy fire crews continue to contain the heavy smoke and blaze.

The US Navy said those assigned to the ship were either in local or base housing and all crew were off the ship at the time of the fire when started on Sunday, July 12th at 0830 PT.

CURRENT STATUS

The ship’s settling caused an immediate evacuation of personnel from the pier and vessel as a precaution.

Naval firefighters continue firefighting efforts.

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS

July 14, 2020

There were personnel from Federal Fire  and over 400 sailors from 12 San Diego-based ships that are part of the marine firefighting units.

July 15, 2020

The Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 3 has dropped more than 1,500 water bucket drops over the fire.  It has been cooling the very large vessel and flight deck at one time enabling crews to enter the ship.

CAUSE

The cause of the fire is still unknown and is under investigation.

INJURIES

63 personnel have been treated which includes 40 sailors and 23 civilians have been treated for minor injuries, including some with heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation.

There are no personnel currently hospitalized.

There were no deaths reported.

#GateFire | CA | Update 4

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

Fire Incident | The Gate Fire is burning off of Hwy 94 and Otay Truck Trail, NW of Delzura, California.

Current Fire Status |  The wildfire has destroyed 1500 acres but fire crews have reached a successful 30% containment status.  They are working tirelessly to suppress / contain during every opportunity they reach.

Resources |  There are 11 Type 3 CAL Fire engines, 13 crews, 4 patrols, 2 bulldozers and 4 water tenders assigned to this fire incident.  This is as of 0600 hours this morning from CAL Fire directly.   There is a report on Social Media that

Evacuations | Evacuations of the Pio Pico Campground are still in effect due to damage to the infrastructure at the Campground.  All evacuees have been mostly relocated to the Red Cross Shelter located at Otay Ranch H.S. in Chula Vista.

An evacuation warning has been issued for the Delzura community.  Some  evacuated yesterday to the evacuation point of the Viejas Casino Parking Lot, but were allowed to return last night with a Law Enforcement escort.

Fire Incident | Fire officials are saying the newly corrected location of the original vegetation fire changed over to a wildfire dubbed the #GateFire is off of Highway 94 and Otay Truck trail.  It is just NW of Dulzura, California.

Current Fire Status | Since our last initial post, the fire has grown from 100 acres to a whopping 300 acres.  The ROS is still dangerous and rapid.  UPDATE (1450 Hours PDT) | 425 acres. 5% contained.

Resources | CAL Fire San Diego fire crews is all we know at this time.  We are waiting for a response from their PIO for the breakdown on resources, personnel and equipment.  We have not received a response at the time of this publication.

Evacuations | Evacuations of the Pio Pico Campground are now in effect.

Fire Incident | The CAL Fire San Diego unit is reporting a vegetation fire broke out around 1130 Hours PDT on Saturday, May 20, 2017, off of Highway 94 and just South of Jamul in San Diego, California.

Current Fire Status | The IC is reporting a dangerous ROS.  When Fire officials reported the first update, the fire had burned only 10 acres but has since increased to 100 acres with a 0% containment status.

Acreage has now bee increased to 1020 from earlier reports of 938 with a 35% containment status.

The fire has been remapped out with 938 acres with a 25% containment status.  Firefighters continue with agressive fire suppression efforts.

FIRE SIT REP

Firefighters spent Saturday night, April 18, 2015, working to try to contain the fast-moving wildfire. Steep and difficult terrain has impacted their efforts but additional resources have arrived and area working to aid their hardworking efforts.

At 00:00, the fire was listed at 300 acres with a 15% containment status.  Evacuations were lifted at 0600 Hours on April 19, 2015.

The cause is still unknown and is under investigation.
