Incident Summary:   An illegal campfire that started in July 2016 has scorched thousands acres of lands, as well as up to almost 100 structures and disrupting hundreds of lives/livelihoods.

Crews have contained the fire at a 76% containment status.

The fire started on Friday, July 22, 2016 around 0845 hours (PDT) from an illegal campfire.

Location:    The Soberanes Fire is located approximately 7 miles NW of Big Sur and on the Ventana Wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest, Garrapata State Park, and areas south of the Carmel Valley in California.

Mostly burning in steep, rugged and difficult to access terrain on the Ventana Wilderness area.

Fuels:  Timber, chaparral and tall grass.

Fire Status:  Active fire behavior with running, flanking and backing. Sill the same for the last 24 hours. (see Update 9/23/2016)

Resources:  Command:   US. Forest Service.

Staffing / Equipment:   1977 personnel  38 crews.  99 engines.  23 helicopters.

Damage Assessment:  126,593 acres.  68 structures destroyed.  $221.9 M Cost to Date

Threats:  Numerous structures threatened.

Area Alerts:  Evacuations, road, area and trail closures in effect
